5 Activities you can do with an ATV while your stay in Tulum.

Actualizado: 13 jun

Hola! If you’re reading this blog it is probably because you’re planning a visit soon or you’re already in Tulum thinking of activities to do. This article focuses mainly on activities with ATVs and frequent questions that might come up whenever you rent an ATV in Tulum.

Since ATVs are off-road vehicles, we strongly recommend not driving them on the highway for more than 6 miles. It's not only to ensure the vehicle stays in good shape, but also because it can be risky due to traffic and faster-moving cars.

That said, Tulum and its surroundings offer some amazing spots you can explore safely with an ATV. In this article you'll find a list of places and activities where your ride will be both fun and safe:

1. Cruise Through Tulum’s Jungle Dirt Roads

As of 2025, Tulum is still undergoing rapid development. This means there are still plenty of dirt roads and jungle paths where you can ride your ATV without much car traffic. It's a great way to enjoy the raw beauty of the area and feel a bit more adventurous!

You can check out the map we've included in the image for a better idea of where to go.

We highly recommend starting with a guided tour, especially if it’s your first time. If you're interested, feel free to reach out to us through the message section on our homepage.

If you’d rather explore on your own, that’s totally possible too! Just make sure to download the Tulum map on Google Maps beforehand in case you lose signal. Also, keep in mind that there are ongoing construction projects around town, so always ride with caution—and don’t forget your helmet!

2.- Take a swim in a Cenote

One of the most iconic attractions you can’t miss during your stay in Tulum are the ancient cenotes—natural sinkholes connected by underground rivers and cave systems. There are over 2,500 cenotes spread across the Riviera Maya, and the Tulum area is home to the largest underground river system in the world, called Sac Actun, which stretches over 380 kilometers.

The best part? Some of these stunning cenotes are accessible by ATV! Here’s a list of nearby cenotes you can visit while riding through the jungle trails.

Cenote Encantado

Located near the end of Tulum’s hotel zone, this beautiful cenote is the perfect spot to catch the sunset over the mangroves or take a refreshing swim after lunch at a nearby beach club. It’s also the only cenote in the area that stays open after 5:00 PM, making it a great option for a late afternoon adventure.

The entrance fee is around $10 USD per person.

Tips:If you're not a confident swimmer, we highly recommend wearing a life vest—safety first! Also, please avoid using sunscreen, as you’ll be required to shower before entering the water to help preserve the cenote’s natural ecosystem. Cenote Escondido y Cristal

These two refreshing cenotes sit right across from each other, separated only by the highway. For around $20 USD, your entrance fee gives you access to both cenotes, making it a great value. It’s a fun stop if you're exploring the area by ATV or scooter, especially if you're staying in a villa or Airbnb in Tulum town.

Tips:Not a strong swimmer? No worries—life vests are highly recommended. And just like with most cenotes, make sure not to wear sunscreen. You'll be asked to shower before swimming to help protect the water and the surrounding ecosystem.

Grand Cenote

The entrance fee is around $25 USD, and you can either rent snorkel gear on-site or bring your own. Lockers are available to keep your belongings safe while you explore.

Tips:This is a very popular spot, so we recommend arriving early—around 8:00 AM—to enjoy a more peaceful experience before the crowds show up. As always, please avoid using sunscreen, since you’ll need to shower before entering the water to help protect the natural environment.

Tips:If you're thinking about jumping into the smaller sinkholes, please be extra cautious—it can be risky. This is another popular spot, so we recommend arriving early, around 8:00 AM, to beat the crowds. And as always, no sunscreen allowed—you’ll be asked to shower before swimming to help keep the water clean and protected.
